Node State is invoked when we have selected the node in the Node Network (e.g. PolyExtrude), and then, by pressing Enter, selected node would be active in the viewport.

What’s really cool about that is the fact that we can have a unique set of shortcuts for every node.

Actually, each state has its own unique set of shortcuts. For example, if you press right mouse button in any state, you are going to see different set of shortcuts and features revolving current invoked state which is great because it makes memorizing shortcuts and features much easier. On top of that some of the tools have help info in the left top corner with all appropriate features and shortcuts.

…shortcut’s are highly dependent on the invoked node and usually each node may have its own set of shortcut’s which can be seen once node is invoked in the viewport and RM Button is clicked.
